Overview. Denver is located in Denver County (08031). The population of Denver changed from 603,329 in 2010 to 693,060 in 2016; a change of 89,731 (14.9%). The county population changed from 603,329 to 693,060, a change of 89,731 (14.9%) during the same period.

Denver is located in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO MSA (CBSA 19740). The CBSA population changed from 2,554,864 to 2,853,077 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 298,213 (11.7%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 19th based on 2016 population, 13rd based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 37th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 1-year estimates, the total resident population was 682,545. The population of one race include 77.1% White alone, 9.5% Black alone, 1.0% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 3.4% Asian alone, and 0.1% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 30.5% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 304,015 total housing units, 287,074 were occupied housing units (households) or 94.4% of total units. Of the 141,759 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $316,700. Of the 141,759 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $1,094. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 143,592 family households, 11.0% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 15.6% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $58,003 with median family income of $72,455. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 154,261 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 70,362 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 483,833 population 25 years and over, 85.8% were high school graduates and 47.1% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

The following notes summarize features of data included in this report.

01. Trends
The Trends section presents model-based demographic estimates developed by the Census Bureau. While these data are intended to be consistent with the ACS data described below, they will typically differ some; even when comparing the ACS 2015 1-year estimate to the model-based 2015 estimate.

02. Demographic-Economic Tables
Reference to "with ACS 1-year data" means that 02 sections of the report use ACS 1-year estimates (available area 65,000 population and over). Where there is no ACS reference, ACS 5-year data are used (available for all areas). In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
23 = Suburb, Small: area outside PC & inside UA & population < 100,000.
31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
32 = Town, Distant: area inside UC that is 10-35 miles from UA.
33 = Town, Remote: area inside UC that is > 35 miles from UA.
41 = Rural, Fringe: non-urban area <= 5 miles from UA & <= 2.5 miles from UC
42 = Rural, Distant: non-urban area 5-25 miles from UA & 2.5-10 miles from UC
43 = Rural, Remote: non-urban area >= 25 miles from UA & >= 10 miles from UC.
