Overview. Hartford is located in Hartford County (09003). The population of Hartford changed from 125,376 in 2010 to 123,243 in 2016; a change of -2,133 (-1.7%). The county population changed from 895,388 to 892,389, a change of -2,999 (-0.3%) during the same period.

Hartford is located in the Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford, CT MSA (CBSA 25540). The CBSA population changed from 1,214,233 to 1,206,836 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of -7,397 (-0.6%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 47th based on 2016 population, 922nd based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 608th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 1-year estimates, the total resident population was 124,014. The population of one race include 34.5% White alone, 38.0% Black alone, 0.8% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 3.0% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 45.1% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 52,369 total housing units, 44,867 were occupied housing units (households) or 85.7% of total units. Of the 9,989 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $159,200. Of the 9,989 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $952. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 27,777 family households, 25.9% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 28.3% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $34,240 with median family income of $36,429. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 38,004 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 14,279 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 74,245 population 25 years and over, 71.3% were high school graduates and 16.9% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
23 = Suburb, Small: area outside PC & inside UA & population < 100,000.
31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
32 = Town, Distant: area inside UC that is 10-35 miles from UA.
33 = Town, Remote: area inside UC that is > 35 miles from UA.
41 = Rural, Fringe: non-urban area <= 5 miles from UA & <= 2.5 miles from UC
