Overview. Minneapolis is located in Hennepin County (27053). The population of Minneapolis changed from 383,134 in 2010 to 413,651 in 2016; a change of 30,517 (8.0%). The county population changed from 1,154,385 to 1,232,483, a change of 78,098 (6.8%) during the same period.

Minneapolis is located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI MSA (CBSA 33460). The CBSA population changed from 3,355,763 to 3,551,036 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 195,273 (5.8%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 16th based on 2016 population, 21st based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 159th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 1-year estimates, the total resident population was 410,935. The population of one race include 63.4% White alone, 19.7% Black alone, 0.9% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 6.6% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 9.7% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 185,135 total housing units, 173,686 were occupied housing units (households) or 93.8% of total units. Of the 81,779 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $227,500. Of the 81,779 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $912. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 77,095 family households, 12.8% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 19.5% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $54,571 with median family income of $77,427. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 113,049 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 40,750 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 276,896 population 25 years and over, 87.9% were high school graduates and 48.3% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

01. Trends
The Trends section presents model-based demographic estimates developed by the Census Bureau. While these data are intended to be consistent with the ACS data described below, they will typically differ some; even when comparing the ACS 2015 1-year estimate to the model-based 2015 estimate.

02. Demographic-Economic Tables
Reference to "with ACS 1-year data" means that 02 sections of the report use ACS 1-year estimates (available area 65,000 population and over). Where there is no ACS reference, ACS 5-year data are used (available for all areas). In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
23 = Suburb, Small: area outside PC & inside UA & population < 100,000.
31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
32 = Town, Distant: area inside UC that is 10-35 miles from UA.
33 = Town, Remote: area inside UC that is > 35 miles from UA.
41 = Rural, Fringe: non-urban area <= 5 miles from UA & <= 2.5 miles from UC
42 = Rural, Distant: non-urban area 5-25 miles from UA & 2.5-10 miles from UC
43 = Rural, Remote: non-urban area >= 25 miles from UA & >= 10 miles from UC.
