Overview. Jackson is located in Hinds County (28049). The population of Jackson changed from 173,744 in 2010 to 169,148 in 2016; a change of -4,596 (-2.6%). The county population changed from 245,694 to 241,229, a change of -4,465 (-1.8%) during the same period.

Jackson is located in the Jackson, MS MSA (CBSA 27140). The CBSA population changed from 568,791 to 579,229 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 10,438 (1.8%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 94th based on 2016 population, 176th based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 392nd based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 1-year estimates, the total resident population was 170,811. The population of one race include 16.6% White alone, 81.4% Black alone, 0.0% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 0.5% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 1.8% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 74,597 total housing units, 62,092 were occupied housing units (households) or 83.2% of total units. Of the 32,944 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $92,600. Of the 32,944 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $790. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 37,101 family households, 25.9% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 31.7% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $32,482 with median family income of $42,362. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 53,782 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 23,837 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 105,366 population 25 years and over, 86.3% were high school graduates and 26.9% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

Reference to "with ACS 1-year data" means that 02 sections of the report use ACS 1-year estimates (available area 65,000 population and over). Where there is no ACS reference, ACS 5-year data are used (available for all areas). In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
23 = Suburb, Small: area outside PC & inside UA & population < 100,000.
31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
32 = Town, Distant: area inside UC that is 10-35 miles from UA.
