Overview. Salem is located in Marion County (41047). The population of Salem changed from 155,109 in 2010 to 167,419 in 2016; a change of 12,310 (7.9%). The county population changed from 315,984 to 336,316, a change of 20,332 (6.4%) during the same period.

Salem is located in the Salem, OR MSA (CBSA 41420). The CBSA population changed from 391,560 to 418,139 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 26,579 (6.8%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 127th based on 2016 population, 91st based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 119th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 1-year estimates, the total resident population was 164,543. The population of one race include 84.8% White alone, 1.8% Black alone, 1.4% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 2.2% Asian alone, and 1.4% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 24.0% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 62,104 total housing units, 58,456 were occupied housing units (households) or 94.1% of total units. Of the 30,391 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $203,200. Of the 30,391 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $812. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 37,507 family households, 11.4% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 17.0% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $49,037 with median family income of $61,097. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 44,683 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 21,436 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 105,793 population 25 years and over, 86.8% were high school graduates and 25.9% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
23 = Suburb, Small: area outside PC & inside UA & population < 100,000.
31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
