Overview. Anchorage is located in Anchorage Municipality (02020). The population of Anchorage changed from 293,415 in 2010 to 298,192 in 2016; a change of 4,777 (1.6%). The county population changed from 293,415 to 298,192, a change of 4,777 (1.6%) during the same period.

Anchorage is located in the Anchorage, AK MSA (CBSA 11260). The CBSA population changed from 383,181 to 402,557 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 19,376 (5.1%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 133rd based on 2016 population, 118th based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 184th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 299,107. The population of one race include 64.9% White alone, 5.9% Black alone, 6.6% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 8.8% Asian alone, and 2.2% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 8.6% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 114,083 total housing units, 105,175 were occupied housing units (households) or 92.2% of total units. Of the 63,120 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $290,500. Of the 63,120 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $1,197. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 69,652 family households, 5.6% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 8.2% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $78,326 with median family income of $91,622. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 81,388 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 35,440 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 189,300 population 25 years and over, 93.0% were high school graduates and 33.2% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.

31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
