Overview. Wilmington is located in New Castle County (10003). The population of Wilmington changed from 70,789 in 2010 to 71,442 in 2016; a change of 653 (0.9%). The county population changed from 538,934 to 556,987, a change of 18,053 (3.3%) during the same period.

Wilmington is located in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD MSA (CBSA 37980). The CBSA population changed from 5,972,049 to 6,070,500 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 98,451 (1.6%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 7th based on 2016 population, 32nd based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 406th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 71,549. The population of one race include 34.6% White alone, 56.0% Black alone, 0.1% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 1.4% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 13.2% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 34,542 total housing units, 28,881 were occupied housing units (households) or 83.6% of total units. Of the 13,329 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $167,500. Of the 13,329 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $910. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 15,315 family households, 20.7% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 24.5% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $40,465 with median family income of $50,737. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 16,769 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 8,113 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 48,453 population 25 years and over, 83.2% were high school graduates and 26.4% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

Reference to "with ACS 1-year data" means that 02 sections of the report use ACS 1-year estimates (available area 65,000 population and over). Where there is no ACS reference, ACS 5-year data are used (available for all areas). In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
