Overview. Savannah is located in Chatham County (13051). The population of Savannah changed from 137,534 in 2010 to 146,763 in 2016; a change of 9,229 (6.7%). The county population changed from 265,894 to 289,082, a change of 23,188 (8.7%) during the same period.

Savannah is located in the Savannah, GA MSA (CBSA 42340). The CBSA population changed from 348,739 to 384,024 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 35,285 (10.1%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 137th based on 2016 population, 69th based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 54th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 142,919. The population of one race include 40.4% White alone, 53.8% Black alone, 0.2% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 2.3% Asian alone, and 0.1% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 5.2% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 62,335 total housing units, 52,798 were occupied housing units (households) or 84.7% of total units. Of the 23,194 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $142,000. Of the 23,194 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $905. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 29,565 family households, 20.9% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 26.5% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $36,466 with median family income of $45,365. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 43,886 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 15,240 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 88,726 population 25 years and over, 86.0% were high school graduates and 27.8% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
23 = Suburb, Small: area outside PC & inside UA & population < 100,000.
31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
32 = Town, Distant: area inside UC that is 10-35 miles from UA.
33 = Town, Remote: area inside UC that is > 35 miles from UA.
41 = Rural, Fringe: non-urban area <= 5 miles from UA & <= 2.5 miles from UC
42 = Rural, Distant: non-urban area 5-25 miles from UA & 2.5-10 miles from UC
43 = Rural, Remote: non-urban area >= 25 miles from UA & >= 10 miles from UC.
