Overview. Portland is located in Cumberland County (23005). The population of Portland changed from 66,093 in 2010 to 66,937 in 2016; a change of 844 (1.3%). The county population changed from 281,484 to 292,041, a change of 10,557 (3.8%) during the same period.

Portland is located in the Portland-South Portland, ME MSA (CBSA 38860). The CBSA population changed from 513,920 to 529,657 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 15,737 (3.1%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 104th based on 2016 population, 137th based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 298th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 66,490. The population of one race include 85.3% White alone, 7.7% Black alone, 0.1% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 3.0% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 3.1% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 33,465 total housing units, 30,119 were occupied housing units (households) or 90.0% of total units. Of the 13,069 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $239,400. Of the 13,069 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $946. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 13,794 family households, 14.3% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 19.7% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $46,280 with median family income of $66,831. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 15,078 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 5,526 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 48,490 population 25 years and over, 92.5% were high school graduates and 46.2% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

Reference to "with ACS 1-year data" means that 02 sections of the report use ACS 1-year estimates (available area 65,000 population and over). Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
