Overview. Lansing is located in Ingham County (26065). The population of Lansing changed from 114,344 in 2010 to 116,020 in 2016; a change of 1,676 (1.5%). The county population changed from 281,065 to 288,051, a change of 6,986 (2.5%) during the same period.

Lansing is located in the Lansing-East Lansing, MI MSA (CBSA 29620). The CBSA population changed from 464,247 to 475,099 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 10,852 (2.3%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 110th based on 2016 population, 172nd based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 352nd based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 114,485. The population of one race include 61.5% White alone, 21.8% Black alone, 0.5% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 4.1% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 12.3% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 55,373 total housing units, 48,414 were occupied housing units (households) or 87.4% of total units. Of the 24,588 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $76,600. Of the 24,588 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $734. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 25,018 family households, 24.1% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 29.6% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $35,563 with median family income of $42,150. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 33,903 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 12,957 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 72,698 population 25 years and over, 87.6% were high school graduates and 25.7% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
23 = Suburb, Small: area outside PC & inside UA & population < 100,000.
31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
32 = Town, Distant: area inside UC that is 10-35 miles from UA.
33 = Town, Remote: area inside UC that is > 35 miles from UA.
