Overview. Bismarck is located in Burleigh County (38015). The population of Bismarck changed from 61,606 in 2010 to 72,417 in 2016; a change of 10,811 (17.5%). The county population changed from 81,714 to 94,487, a change of 12,773 (15.6%) during the same period.

Bismarck is located in the Bismarck, ND MSA (CBSA 13900). The CBSA population changed from 115,277 to 131,635 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 16,358 (14.2%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 312nd based on 2016 population, 134th based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 16th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 66,980. The population of one race include 91.3% White alone, 1.1% Black alone, 4.1% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 0.9% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 1.9% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 31,048 total housing units, 29,716 were occupied housing units (households) or 95.7% of total units. Of the 19,042 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $183,100. Of the 19,042 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $752. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 16,932 family households, 6.0% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 9.6% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $58,901 with median family income of $79,743. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 14,828 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 7,087 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 45,616 population 25 years and over, 92.8% were high school graduates and 34.2% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

Reference to "with ACS 1-year data" means that 02 sections of the report use ACS 1-year estimates (available area 65,000 population and over). Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1.
