Overview. Oklahoma City is located in Oklahoma County (40109). The population of Oklahoma City changed from 582,110 in 2010 to 638,367 in 2016; a change of 56,257 (9.7%). The county population changed from 721,096 to 782,970, a change of 61,874 (8.6%) during the same period.

Oklahoma City is located in the Oklahoma City, OK MSA (CBSA 36420). The CBSA population changed from 1,257,950 to 1,373,211 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 115,261 (9.2%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 41st based on 2016 population, 29th based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 62nd based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 610,672. The population of one race include 67.7% White alone, 14.3% Black alone, 2.9% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 4.3% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 18.3% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 261,493 total housing units, 232,254 were occupied housing units (households) or 88.8% of total units. Of the 135,259 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $138,600. Of the 135,259 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $778. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 145,098 family households, 14.0% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 18.3% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $47,779 with median family income of $60,024. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 160,648 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 79,083 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 394,784 population 25 years and over, 85.0% were high school graduates and 29.1% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
23 = Suburb, Small: area outside PC & inside UA & population < 100,000.
31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
32 = Town, Distant: area inside UC that is 10-35 miles from UA.
33 = Town, Remote: area inside UC that is > 35 miles from UA.
41 = Rural, Fringe: non-urban area <= 5 miles from UA & <= 2.5 miles from UC
