Overview. Florence is located in Florence County (45041). The population of Florence changed from 37,534 in 2010 to 38,317 in 2016; a change of 783 (2.1%). The county population changed from 137,068 to 138,742, a change of 1,674 (1.2%) during the same period.

Florence is located in the Florence, SC MSA (CBSA 22500). The CBSA population changed from 205,680 to 205,976 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 296 (0.1%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 215th based on 2016 population, 503rd based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 537th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 38,000. The population of one race include 51.8% White alone, 44.6% Black alone, 0.2% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 2.0% Asian alone, and 0.1% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 2.2% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 17,493 total housing units, 15,251 were occupied housing units (households) or 87.2% of total units. Of the 8,891 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $153,700. Of the 8,891 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $682. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 9,873 family households, 14.9% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 18.4% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $42,853 with median family income of $54,997. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 10,211 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 5,185 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 25,539 population 25 years and over, 88.8% were high school graduates and 30.6% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

Reference to "with ACS 1-year data" means that 02 sections of the report use ACS 1-year estimates (available area 65,000 population and over). Where there is no ACS reference, ACS 5-year data are used (available for all areas). In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
