Overview. Lynchburg is located in Lynchburg city (51680). The population of Lynchburg changed from 75,704 in 2010 to 80,212 in 2016; a change of 4,508 (6.0%). The county population changed from 75,704 to 80,212, a change of 4,508 (6.0%) during the same period.

Lynchburg is located in the Lynchburg, VA MSA (CBSA 31340). The CBSA population changed from 253,058 to 260,232 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 7,174 (2.8%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 185th based on 2016 population, 203rd based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 322nd based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 78,158. The population of one race include 65.1% White alone, 28.4% Black alone, 0.2% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 2.8% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 3.3% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 32,252 total housing units, 28,528 were occupied housing units (households) or 88.5% of total units. Of the 14,458 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $149,200. Of the 14,458 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $778. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 16,366 family households, 18.5% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 24.8% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $39,589 with median family income of $51,128. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 29,433 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 7,276 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 43,635 population 25 years and over, 88.3% were high school graduates and 33.1% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.
