Overview. Richmond is located in Richmond city (51760). The population of Richmond changed from 204,115 in 2010 to 223,170 in 2016; a change of 19,055 (9.3%). The county population changed from 204,115 to 223,170, a change of 19,055 (9.3%) during the same period.

Richmond is located in the Richmond, VA MSA (CBSA 40060). The CBSA population changed from 1,210,272 to 1,281,708 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 71,436 (5.9%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 45th based on 2016 population, 41st based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 152nd based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 213,735. The population of one race include 44.0% White alone, 48.6% Black alone, 0.5% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 2.2% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 6.4% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 99,449 total housing units, 87,224 were occupied housing units (households) or 87.7% of total units. Of the 36,875 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $193,700. Of the 36,875 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $896. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 40,598 family households, 19.3% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 25.5% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $40,758 with median family income of $50,307. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 55,505 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 18,063 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 143,240 population 25 years and over, 83.2% were high school graduates and 36.0% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

Where there is no ACS reference, ACS 5-year data are used (available for all areas). In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for areas which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 area geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
