Overview. Olympia is located in Thurston County (53067). The population of Olympia changed from 47,083 in 2010 to 51,202 in 2016; a change of 4,119 (8.7%). The county population changed from 253,062 to 275,222, a change of 22,160 (8.8%) during the same period.

Olympia is located in the Olympia-Tumwater, WA MSA (CBSA 36500). The CBSA population changed from 253,062 to 275,222 during the period 2010 to 2016, a change of 22,160 (8.8%) Among all 933 CBSAs, this CBSA ranked 173rd based on 2016 population, 108th based on 2010 to 2016 population change, and 68th based on 2010 to 2016 percent population change.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates, the total resident population was 48,941. The population of one race include 85.3% White alone, 1.8% Black alone, 0.9% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 6.6% Asian alone, and 0.3% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 7.9% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.1 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the 22,364 total housing units, 20,870 were occupied housing units (households) or 93.3% of total units. Of the 9,981 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $242,100. Of the 9,981 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $952. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.4 below.

Among the 10,943 family households, 11.8% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 17.7% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The median household income was $53,617 with median family income of $73,550. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.3 below.

Education. Of the 11,657 population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 4,669 were enrolled in grades K-8. Among the 34,228 population 25 years and over, 93.3% were high school graduates and 42.2% were college graduates. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02.2 below.

Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the area based on Census 2010 SF1.
