This section provides a description of selected software resources developed by Proximity
to process and analyze Census 2000 and related data.
Most of these programs are used in the
Geodemographics WebCourse
where participants get hands-on experience and learn to use the tools
with data for their own areas of interest.

ASC2DBF Software -- Convert Census 2000 ASCII Files to DBF
The ASC2DBF software is a program developed by Proximity
that can used to convert Census 2000 ASCII files to dBASE4 structure.
See the ASC2DBF description that summarizes the role
and scope of ASC2DBF, how you can download and use it, and benefits.
Users of ASC2DBF version C1.1. should upgrade to version C1.2.
The new version has the optional capability of generating the PL321 version
(40 subject matter items) of
the P.L. 94-171 files without first creating the more detailed space and time
consuming full version (288 subject matter items).
Other processing improvements have also been made.
The ASC2DBF, and companion PL321 software, are
both freely available for non-commercial downloading and use. There are
no restrictions placed on use or redistribution of data developed using the software.
The Census Bureau provides access to the
first detailed demographic data from Census 2000
via the
Census FTP site.
The first set of detailed data are the P.L. 94-171 redistricting data.
These data are accessible on the Census Bureau FTP data download site in ASCII format. The Census Bureau will not
provide software to convert the raw data into a form that can be processed by
popular software. The ASC2DBF software responds to that need.
The Census Bureau
file structural information. The xBASE structure described in this
reference is the same structure as that used by the ASC2DBF software.
