CommunityViewer Edge2Street -- Converting TIGER/Line Edge Shapefiles to Street Shapefiles The CommunityViewer (CV) Tools>Edge2Street operation converts a TIGER/Line edge shapefile to a streets shapefile. The term TIGER/Line shapefile refers to shapefiles developed by the Census Bureau as described in at http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tgrshp.html. TIGER/Line shapefiles, newly structured files becoming initially available in 2008, differ from the legacy Census Bureau TIGER/Line files. See above referenced document for additional information. While the Census Bureau TIGER/Line shapefiles (TGRSHP) include shapefiles for many types of geography, streets shapefiles were not developed/make available to Census 2010 LUCA participants. To accommodate traditional methods of address geocoding and related applications using street segments, the Edge2Street operation is used. The TGRSHP EDGES (or all lines) is the starting point to develop the streets shapefile. Requirements to use Edge2Street operation Edge2Street operates on a single county TGRSHP EDGE file. Three Census Bureau sourced files are required (files are provided to LUCA participants by Census): - Edge or All Lines TIGER/Line shapefile (EDGE -- shapefile) (example uses Forsyth County, GA data -- c:\cv\gafiles\luca_2010_edges_13117.shp) - Topological Faces Relationship File (FACES -- "associated database file") (example uses Forsyth County, GA data -- c:\cv\gafiles\luca_2010_faces_13117.dbf) - Address Ranges Relationship File (ADDR -- "associated database file") (example uses Forsyth County, GA data -- c:\cv\gafiles\luca_2010_addr_13117.dbf) Running the Edge2Street Operation Open a CV project that includes minimally the county EDGES shapefile (see above). In the Legend panel, click the EDGES layer (making it the active layer) that is shapefile to be used to create the streets shapefile. Click Tools>Edge2Street and the Edge2Street form appears (see above). The "associated database files" must exist as specified in the form. Specify the full path and name of the streets shapefile to be created. The streets shapefile must not be in use by any application. If the streets shapefile exists, it will be replaced in this operation. When ready, click the Go button. The streets shapefile is created. The streets shapefile includes only those line segments from the EDGES shapefile that are attributed as streets and includes all of the fields contained in the original EDGES shapefile dbf. In addition, the new fields, listed below, are added to the dbf record and populated using the "associated database files."
