Census 2010 LUCA, TIGER/Line Shapefiles & Edge2Street
Census Bureau data files now being distributed to LUCA participants include a variation of the newly structured TIGER/Line shapefiles. The general public use TIGER/Line shapefiles will replace the legacy TIGER/Line files, but have not yet been made available by Census. The LUCA TIGER/Line shapefiles are structured a little differently but provide a first look at using the TIGER/Line shapefiles for both LUCA and other applications.

In general, TIGER/Line shapefiles (TLS) are structured by type of geography. For example, there is a places TLS, census tract TLS, and so on. Like the TIGER/Line legacy files, the TLS's are stuctured on a county by county basis.

Among the notable files missing from the LUCA TLS set is a streets shapefile. This is important because without the streets shapefile there is no way the TLS files can be used directly for geocoding -- assigning census block and higher level codes to addresses. For LUCA TLS, the streets shapefile must be derived from using a combination of the newly introduced EDGES TLS and two associated database files, the ADDR (addresses) and FACES (attributes of EDGE segment sides).

The Edge2Street feature has been added to CommunityViewer software that enables creation of the TIGER/Line streets shapefile. See description of the Edge2Street feature and use.

School District Demographic Updates (ESEA Title I Estimates)
Since Census 2000, the Census Bureau has developed estimates of selected demographic characteristics by school district. The estimates are developed by the Census Bureau under the sponsorship/funding by the U.S. Department of Education for use in allocating Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Title I funds (largest Federal K-12 education funding program). These are the only national scope (all school districts) post-census demographic estimates developed by a Federal agency.

The 2005 annual Census Bureau school district demographic estimates were completed by Census in December 2007. The estimates include only these subject matter items:

  • Total population
  • Age Relevant children ages 5-to-17
  • Age Relevant related children ages 5-to-17 in families in poverty

Access these data in ranking tables available left column links at http://proximityone.com/sddmi.htm.

State 2007 Population Estimates
As a part of the annual population estimates program, the Census Bureau 2007 (7/1/2007) state level official population estimates were completed in December 2007. These state estimates will be used to develop 2007 (7/1/2007) county level official population estimates expected to be completed in March 2008.
