Decision Making Information Projects
-- metro and regional projects ready to use with CommunityViewer -- content

What do the DMI Project datasets contain? This section provides a general description of project content and what is included. The projects provide much more than a getting started set of data. Based on years of experience we have determined what key data and geography meet the needs of most users of these types of information.

A key feature of the projects is expandability. You can add your own streets centerline files, tax parcel boundary files, school district attendance areas, to name a few.

View the legend in the left column of any of the project start-up views to see what types of data and geography are included. The map layers (shapefiles with integrated demographic/economic data) include the following types of data.

U.S. by State. Even though the project focuses on a metro or region, all projects include the U.S. by state boundaries.

U.S. by County. All projects include the U.S. by county boundaries. This enables viewing names andlocations of adjacent counties throughout the U.S. The U.S. by County layer has integrated demographic trends data showing annual population change and components of change.

State by MSA. The State by Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) layer shows the boundaries for all MSAs intersecting with the project focus state(s).

State by Place. View places (incorporated places and census designated places) in the project focus state(s). The place area color fill pattern is initially set to yellow with a transparency of typically 50%. This enables you to see how these formally defined areas of population concentration relate to urban areas.

State by Urban Area. View urban areas (in general, a place of 2,500 or more and continuous census blocks determined to have socioeconomic affinity with the core place) in the project focus state(s). The urban area color fill pattern is initially set to orange with a transparency of typically 50%. This enables you to see how urban areas relate to places.

State Major Roads. View Interstate and major roads for the project focus state(s).

MSA/Region Roads. The MSA/Roads layer includes all roads in the focus MSA/Region.

K-12 Schools. The Schools layer includes all public schools in the focus state(s). The start-up view shows schools classified as Title I or not Title I. Title I is the largest Federal funding program for K-12 education whose objectives are to increase needed resources for schools and areas with relatively higher incidence of poverty or lower prosperity. The Title I attributes are provided to be illustrative only. Other attributes of schools are included.

MSA/Region Streams. The Streams layer includes all streams and hydrology in the focus MSA/Region.

MSA/Region Water Areas. The Water Areas layer includes lakes and other permanent bodies of water in the focus MSA/Region.

MSA/Region Landmark Areas. The Landmark Areas includes areas such as parks, recreational areas, colleges and universities, special government facilities, airports and other such areas in the focus MSA/Region.

MSA/Region Census Block Demographics. The Census Blocks Demographics layer includes all census blocks (statistically defined areas averaging 100 population per block) in the focus MSA/Region. More than 100 demographic items are preloaded for your use. The start-up structure of the project shows the population ages 5 to 17 years of age as a thematic map. This demographic item is selected to illustrate how you can view data for this geographic granularity.

MSA/Region Census Block Group Demographics. The Census Block Group Demographics layer includes all census block groups (statistically defined areas averaging 1,000 population per block group -- groups of contiguous blocks) in the focus MSA/Region. More than 100 demographic/socioeconomic items are preloaded for your use. The start-up structure of the project shows the median household income by block group as a thematic map. This demographic item is selected to illustrate how you can view data for this geographic granularity.

MSA/Region Census Census Tract Demographics. The Census Tract Demographics layer includes all census tracts (statistically defined areas averaging 4,000 population per tract -- groups of contiguous block groups) in the focus MSA/Region. More than 100 demographic/socioeconomic items are preloaded for your use. The start-up structure of the project shows the percent population in poverty by census tract as a thematic map. This demographic item is selected to illustrate how you can view data for this geographic granularity.
