Decision Making Information Projects
-- metro and regional projects ready to use with CommunityViewer -- uses

Who can benefit from using the CommunityViewer project filesets and how? Here are a few examples.

K-12 Schools/School Districts -- Performance Improvement. Schools, school districts, and stakeholders in K-12 education can use the CommunityViewer projects to see where schools are located and how schools relate to neighborhoods and other geography. The project filesets provide an ideal starting place to add geocoded student data to assist in examining patterns of school and student performance. The project also provides a basis for adding attendance area boundaries. Attendance area demographics can then be added. User can then assess attendance area attributes and how the size and balance relates to other areas in the region.

Add a geocoded voter registration file. See where voting on bond referendums have occurred. Use the resulting knowledge to better plan community outreach for future referendum and elections. Learn how you can better communicate to key segments of the population.

Community and Economic Development. The same set of K-12 education related data also relates to interests and needs of those engaged in community and economic development. The census block level granularity enables an economic developer to use the CV site analysis tool and show how the size of prospective labor force in a custom defined area of interest. Compare the buying power in one area (some selected grouping of block groups for example) with another area. Add a tax parcel shapefile to the project and attribute those parcels that might be of interest to a new business. Use the CV add point and polygons feature to show prospective locations and market areas.

More in the area of community development, view the locations of parks and distribution of population. Use the resource as a tool to make compelling and documenting presentations to stakeholders.

Businesses. Click your location onto a map. Click on your service/market area. Examine the size and characteristics of the population that you are reaching. Click on your competitor locations. Click on your assessment of their market/service areas. Examine your competitive position. Identify market areas with best potential. Add your sales data by any geographic gradient. Learn where your sales might be boosted with expanded marketing programs.

Do you have routes for delivery or scheduling service stops? Click these locations onto the map, making a new layer. Make many of these as might be applicable. Use the tools to help better route optimization.

Academia and Learning Environments. There are a near unlimited number of ways that CommunityViewer and the project filesets can be use in college, K-12, and other classroom and virtual class learning environments. These opportunities are not so much in the Geographic Information System and mapping technology curricula areas but areas like sociology, political science, economics, marketing, geology and many others. Tie your instructional programs to the geography where you and your students live. Learn how to use these types of data and geography to better understand how to use pattern analysis.

Security, Control and Confidentiality. With all of these data on your computer, you have absolute control of security. No need to worry about intrusive or inadverdant access to your confidential information by unauthorized users.

Benefits of Map Projects on Your Computer. Why use map projects on your computer? Why not just use a Web-based access resource? Many reasons, but the main one is that you cannot easily add and modify data located on a Webserver. In most cases such adds and modifications are not supported. Another practical reason is that Webserver applications are inherently slow. In addition, common-place mouse-based operations (zooms and map panning/dragging) are normally not available making for awkward navigation of Webserver mapping applications. Output alternatives are normally very limited on Webserver mapping applications as compared to PC-standalone applications.
