Proximity Census 2000 Demographic Profile Databases
  -- Census Tracts

The Census 2000 state by census tract files described in this section contain data extracted from Summary File 1. These files have been developed in a specific structure referred to as "DP2000E" so that data records for census tracts may be integrated more easily with other data files containing the same subject matter but for different types of geography. See last section on this page for more information.

Using Census Tract Data. Census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a county or statistically equivalent entity. A primary purpose of census tracts is to provide a stable set of geographic units for the presentation of decennial census data. For Census 2000, the entire U.S. is covered by approximately 65,000 census tracts (see details).

For most areas, census tracts have between 1,500 and 8,000 people, with an optimum size of 4,000 people. When first delineated, census tracts are designed to be relatively homogeneous with respect to socioeconomic characteristics. The territory covered by census tracts varies widely depending on the density of settlement.

Census tracts are the smallest geographic area for which detailed Census 2000 race/ethnic tabulations are provided (race/ethnic iteration records in Summary Files).

Downloading Files. The state by census tract files may be downloaded for states listed in the links provided in the left column. The links provide download access to zip files which may then be expanded on your computer. These files may be processed by any software that can read generic dbase4 files.

Terms of Use. Unregistered users must first register for a userid and password to download the files. These files may not be used for any funded or income producing activity. For a commercial usage license, please contact Proximity (contact link bottom of page). Neither these files, nor their direct derivative, may be posted for redistribution, free or otherwise, on any online facility or any media. Posting of links referencing availability of data from this Website is encouraged.

The suggested source reference for these data is "U.S. Bureau of the Census, Census 2000 Summary File 1, extract files developed by Proximity (http://proximityone.com)."

Database Content. See subject matter items table. The "DP2000E" reference is an abbreviation for Demographic Profile 2000 -- Elemental items. The data fields used in this file were selected so that the elements in the file can be used to generate a demographic profile like the Census Bureau "Demographic Profile 1."
