Accessing and Using Post-Census 2000 Demographic Updates

What do you know about recent demographic trends in your county, market, metro or region? How do you locate, acquire and use the right data to get these answers and develop insights?

The Census Bureau post-Census 2000 annual demographic estimates are generally regarded as the most recent and accurate demographic updates available for use in these types of analyses. The detailed age-race-sex-origin estimates by county were released by the Census Bureau on September 30, 2004 (see details). These data are also the basis for developing more current estimates and projections.

While these data can be freely downloaded and used, it can be a challenge to organize the data in a form for effective use. The Demographic Trends & Composition Analysis (DTCA) integrated software and database resource makes this task easier. Using the DTCA dataload tool, the comma-delimited files available from Census may be directly downloaded and converted into a database structure for immediate use -- all accomplished with a few mouse clicks.

The following graphic shows the DTCA user interface. After selecting Honolulu County, Hawaii and Age-Sex-Race-Origin settings, Profile>View is used to display the selected data. It is easy to see that the total population in this county has increased slightly since Census 2000. It can also be seen that the population ages 20-29 has decreased while the population 80 years and over has increased. Many such conclusions and inferences can be drawn from this and related tables.

An HTML profile is then displayed as shown in the following graphic. This data organization, or presentation structure, is one of many available.

The same data are saved in Excel format having a similar organization as shown below. The Excel structured file makes it easier to analyze the data in comparison with other counties, metros, a region, or state.

An important feature of the DTAC software is the ability to view these same subject matter categories but for different population groups. In the following display, the same annual age items are selected for the population that is 1) Male and 2) Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander in combination with other races.

The profile saved in Excel format is presented below. As the cell positions are the same in this file and the one above, it is easy to compare attributes of this sub-population group with the total population.

Click on the metro buttons in the rightmost listbox panel and select a metropolitan area. A profile appears providing a summary of demographic trends and composition for the metro. It is easy to see how each county is changing in the metro and what part of the total metro is represented by each county.

Download and explore use of the DTAC resource.
