Census 2000 Demographics [go to top]

Census 2000 Asian and Native Hawaiian Population Distributions by State (02/20/02)

Two spreadsheet files may now be accessed via the Proximity downloads page (see item 1.2) that provide Asian and Native Hawaiian population distributions by state. One file contains a state level extract from Summary File 1 (PCT5): Asian alone with one Asian category for selected grouos [19] (Tabulation Universe: Total Asian categories tallied for people with one Asian category only and people with no specific Asian category reported). Another file contains a state level extract from Summary File 1 (PCT8): Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone with one Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander category for selected groups [14] (Tabulation Universe: Total Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander categories tallied for people with one Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander category only and people with no specific Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander category reported).

Hawaii Census 2000 Equal Employment Opportunity Data Planning (01/21/02)

The Census 2000 Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) special tabulation file is now in final planning stages. Plans for the EEO special tabulation file are summarized at http://proximityone.com/eeo.htm. There are numerous changes in the scope of data to be developed in comparison to data developed for the 1990 Census. There are at least two major ways that these changes will impact on the Hawaii Census 2000 EEO data. First, data will not be tabulated for places or counties with less than 50,000 population. The 1990 Census EEO data were provided for all counties. Second, race/ethnic tabulations differ for the State of Hawaii relative to all other states. Race/ethnic categories planned are summarized on the above webpage.

Hawaii Census 2000 Geographic Identification Code Scheme (1/21/02)

The Hawaii Census 2000 Geographic Identification Code Scheme (GICS) provides an integrated listing of counties, CCDs, CDPs, and remainder of CCD for each of these types geographic areas for the state. For each of these areas, the GICS provides the summary level code, FIPS code for each type of geography, name of the area, and the Census 2000 population and housing counts. This file may be accessed at http://proximityone.com/higics.txt. More information on the GICS and national scope file is located at http://proximityone.com/cen2000.htm#gics.

Hawaii Census 2000 Summary File 1 Statewide Census Tract Demographic Profile Database

Hawaii Census 2000 Summary File 1 statewide census block, census tract, and county databases have been developed by Proximity and may be downloaded:
  1. DP15TC.ZIP -- Demographic Profile State 15 Tracts and Counties)
This zip file contains two databases: p15140.dbf (census tracts) and p15050.dbf (counties).
  2. DP15B.ZIP -- Demographic Profile State 15 Blocks
This 2.2 MB zip file expands to the 34 MB file p15101a.dbf containing all 18,990 Hawaii census blocks.
These database files have been developed for use in connection with the Proximity ASC2DBF software. Anyone can make use of these files with no restriction. The files may be processed by any program with the ability to process a generic dbase4 structured file.

The content of each database file is summarized in brief in DP2000E description. The first 30 items are fields derived largely from the Summary File 1 geographic segment. The other 173 fields are extracted from various Summary File 1 data segments. The table/item reference number is shown in the right column. Refer to the Summary File technical documentation (see http://proximityone.com/cen2000sf1.htm) for additional information.

The content of these files can be derived for any geographic area down to the census block level using the Proximity ASC2DBF software ("PCT" items are only available for census tract and higher level geographic areas). This file structure is referred to as the Demographic Profile "elemental" database and is used by the Proximity Interactive Analysis System (IAS) to develop the Demographic Profile database corresponding to the subject matter items in the Census Bureau complete count demographic profile. The "elemental" database also contains the number of persons ages 20 years and under by gender by single years of age. These data are used by IAS in modeling applications to develop demographic tabulations of school age children and baseline data for use in developing demographic updates.

Census 2000 Persons 5 to 17 Years of Age by School District

This section provides procedural information relating to how you can develop Census 2000 data on the number of children by school district (or other areas) for persons 5 to 17 years of age or any other age cohort for persons 20 years of age and below. While the focus of the example used here is on tabulating data for a Hawaii high school complex, the procedure applies to any public school district as defined for Census 2000. As noted elsewhere in this Web page, Hawaii high school complexes are treated as if they are Federal school districts for purposes of tabulating data from Census 2000.

The example provided here builds on the above information pertaining to the Hawaii DP2000E database for census blocks. In this example we show how to develop the summary statistic “Census 2000 total number of persons ages 5 to 17 years" for a high school complex. Interested users of these data may then apply similar procedures to develop data to meet specific interests. The age interval of 5 to 17 years is arbitrary and selected due to the widespread use of this age range. Using the method described below, you could define your own age range. While the example shows how to develop data aggregates for school district areas, any other area for which geocodes are present in the DP2000E (such as places or zip code tabulation areas) could also be a aggregative tabulation area.

The Hilo High School Complex (HSC) is used for this example. From the Proximity school district demographics Hawaii school district demographics summary page (http://64.0.86.234/~sdd/hiplsd.htm) the Census 2000 code for Hilo HSC is determined to be 10355. In the Census 2000 summary files, HSC codes are contained in the field “SDSEC”.

  1. Download and unzip the above referenced file DP15B.ZIP.
  2. Open the expanded file P15101A.DBF using Excel (there are many other options).
  3. Expand the width of column A to 10.
  4. Insert in cell A2 and enter: +sum(dk2..dw2)+sum(ee2..eq2)
  5. Copy cell A2 content to column A
  6. Insert in cell A1 and enter: +sumif(n2..n18891,”10355”,a2..a18891)
  7. The total number of persons ages 5-17 years in Hilo HSC appears in A1 (5,019 persons)
For reference, these cells contain the corresponding values:
DK -- SF1 item P014008, males 5 years of age
DW -- SF1 item p014020, males 17 years of age
EE -- SF1 item p014029, females 5 years of age
EQ -- SF1 item p014041, females 17 years of age

You can alter any of these formulas to obtain other summary data.

  1. Insert +sum(a2..a18991) in cell A1 and enter. The cell A1 formula generates the number 217,604 -- the number of persons ages 5 to 17 years in the State.
  2. Insert +sum(aq2..aq18991) in cell A1 and enter. Column AQ contains SF1 item P001001, total population. The cell A1 formula generates the number 1,211,537 -- the Census 200 total number of persons in Hawaii.
Users of the Proximity Interactive Analysis System (IAS) may use the automatic data aggregation feature and build summary records for all high school complexes. In turn, data for the IAS aggregated high school complex records may be displayed in a highly organized and documented demographic profile structure suitable for printing and distribution.

Important. “PCT” data fields in the DP2000E database records "below” the census tract level (therefore census block records) contain the value “-1” as a missing data indicator. This is because the Census Bureau did not release PCT table data below the census tract level to maintain confidentiality.

Hawaii Summary File 1 DBFs on CD-ROM

The Hawaii Census 2000 Summary File 1 (SF1) data are being used by Proximity as the demonstration and documentation files for development and support of the Proximity Census 2000/geodemographics software. We have developed the Hawaii SF1 dbase files assist users of this software in testing applications with statewide files that do not use a large amount of hard disk space.

Two CD-ROMs contain the Hawaii SF1 dbase files generated by ASC2DBF. These files can be used with Proximity software to experiment with ASC2DBF with setups making use of geographic segment reduction and subject matter selection. The CD DBFs may be used directly with Cen2Shp, DataView, and IAS for all application features. These files may be processed with any program that can process a standard dbase4 structured file.

To order these CDs, send an e-mail to support@proximityone.com, fax purchase order to Proximity at (703) 256-9431, or send check to Proximity, PO Box 3565, Alexandria, VA 22302-3565. Fee includes shipping and handling.

First Census 2000 Native Hawaiian Data to be Released

As reported in the Proximity Census 2000 Data Access and Use webpage, the Census Bureau is now releasing Census 2000 Demographic Profiles on a state by state basis. The profiles for Hawaii are now available via the Census web server. See above link for details or use this link to Hawaii data.

These profiles are of general interest as they contain the "more detailed" (but very basic) demographic characteristics for selected types of geographic areas. Among the approximate 100 subject matter items included is the tabulation of the Native Hawaiian population, marking the first time these data have been available from Census 2000.

The profile data are provided for several types of larger geographic areas (again refer to the description in the above link). In general, counties and places are the smallest geographic areas for which data are provided. As previously reported in this web page, 131 Census Designated Places (CDP's) in Hawaii were identified for Census 2000 tabulation purposes (see description of these areas in the text that follows). The profiles are available for each Hawaii county and each of the 131 CDP's.

Also, refer to the referenced link (above) for information on how you can use the Proximity DataView to load the Census provided CSV-formatted data files into a dbase structure to more easily and quickly process and view the data in different ways in data processing/integration applications.

Census 2000 Demographics for Hawaii Census Designated Places

The table presented below shows the population of 131 Hawaii Census Designated Places (CDPs). Census designated places are areas of population concentration with boundaries delineated in the Census Bureau TIGER files for which Census 2000 demographic data are tabulated. CDPs have no governmental nor legal powers and are identified for purposes of tabulating data that have relevance for socioeconomic planning and analysis. For tabulation purposes, in the decennial census, CDPs are treated in a manner similar to incorporated cities.

The CDP program has long been in operation but has been greatly expanded in scope in Hawaii and certain other states for Census 2000. Nationally, the number of decennial census places and cities has increased from approximately 19,400 in the 1990 Census to 25,152 for Census 2000 -- mainly through the increase in the number of recognized CDPs. To see more about the largest 100 U.S. cities and places based on Census 2000, see http://proximityone.com/plc100.htm.

The 131 Hawaii CDPs include 1,100,844 persons, or 90.86 percent of the Hawaii Census 2000 total population of 1,211,537. Using the 1990 Census definition of "urban place," places with population of 2,500 or more persons, the Hawaii urban population in these CDPs was 1,018,588, 84.07 percent of the total population, as of Census 2000.

Above map shows Hawaii Places (Census 2000) and Urbanized Areas (1990 Census). Census 2000 Urbanized Areas will not be defined until March 2002.

Above map shows Honolulu County 1990 Census Urbanized Areas superimposed on Census 2000 Places.

Above map shows Honolulu County Census 2000 Places. This map, compared with the previous map enables you to compare how the 1990 Census Hawaii urban population corresponds to Census 2000 places (for this county). For Census 2000, there will be Hawaii urban territory and population designated for places located outside of urbanized areas. This will "document" a larger urban population, based on Census 2000 as compared to the 1990 Census, due to the differences in the scope of territory designated as urban for Census 2000. In sum, this will likely indicate that Hawaii is even "more urban" than documented by 1990 Census results.

  • Hawaii Census 2000 "School District" Data now available
Census block level data records the recently released Census 2000 P.L. 94-171 file have been aggregated to school district summaries. Proximity is developing HTML pages for each state that show basic demographics for each district. For more information on this initiative, refer to http://proximityone.com/plsd.htm.

"School district" summary demographics have been prepared for the 7 Hawaii administrative areas, 42 Hawaii high school complex areas, and Hawaii statewide (the Federal Hawaii unified school district). Tabulation areas are referred to as school districts because these areas were included in the Census 2000 U.S. National Center for Education Statistics national school district mapping project (basis for forthcoming school district special tabulation). The Hawaii Department of Education was responsible for having the Hawaii administrative and high school complex areas included in the national program.

The following HTML table is generated by the same software that produces the school district summary file.

  • Downloadable Hawaii Mapping Files

Files listed below are available for downloading and use with software/analytical applications that support shape files. Each county link will download a "shape file set" in zip format which should be expanded once downloaded. Contact Proximity support for more information regarding use of these files. These file sets will be periodically updated/extended.

Shape File Set: A shape file set is a zipped file comprised of three files referenced by the mapping application software as a "shape file." go to files
3/22/01: Proximity has developed a variation on the Honolulu County by Census 2000 block map file that you can download and examine using ArcExplorer, ArcView, or similar. Honolulu County by block file in zip format, unzip the file, and open it using the mapping software. A Honolulu County by census tract shape file set, incorporating 40 Census 2000 subject matter items has also been developed. The following text reviews the county by block file and then the county by tract file is reviewed.

The m15003b shape file dbf has been augmented to include the total population (from the P.L. 94-171 file). You can prepare thematic maps such as the one shown below and start to see what the Census 2000 data can be used to show/depict for visual analysis. Proximity has developed software that enables the shape file dbf to be augmented by loading any of the P.L. 94-171 data items into the dbf. More information on this resource will be forthcoming soon. For now, only this one shape file set has new Census 2000 data added.

The following map depicts Honolulu County by census block and shows the the total Census 2000 population in accordance with the legend at the left by census block. Each interval shows what population range is associated with corresponding color. The yellow highlighted census block is the block with highest population magnitude, approximitely 5,400 people.

The following map is a zoom into the Diamond Head area and enables the viewer to more easily see the population distribution by block.

Honolulu County by Tract Shape File Set. You can download the Honolulu County by tract shape file in zip format, unzip the file, and open it using the mapping software. The Honolulu County by census tract shape file set incorporates the 40 Census 2000 subject matter items described at the website http://proximityone.com/pl321.htm. In addition to the 40 subject matter items, the file includes the land area (square meters), water area (square meters), and latitude-longitude internal point (enabling users to develop an "event theme" and show attributes as weighted graphic icons). Divide square meters by the constant 2,589,988 to derive square miles. The following sample maps were prepared using this file.

  • DataView -- dbase database viewer from Proximity
Download this program to view and process dBASE III and dBASE IV structured files. One use of DataView is to examine/process statistical database files listed in above referenced links and "dbf" files that are a part of "shape" file sets listed in above referenced links. See further information in DataView description Web page. Send questions or comments concerning use of this application setup to Proximity support for assistance with use of these files.

  • Sample ArcView Project (as used in the sessions)
Download this zip file (4.5 MB), containing files similar to the ArcView project and files used in the sessions on January 25 and 26, 2001. This application set presently requires the user to have ArcView to run this mapping application (we are working on alternatives).

It is suggested that this file set be unzipped into the folder c:\himaps. The ZIP file contains these files (same versions as in above listed TIGER derived downloads):
• himaps.apr (Project file for ArcView)
• himaps.aep (Project file for ArcExplorer)
( Download Free ArcExplorer to use the himaps.aep)
• sd15.* (Statewide high school complexes)
• 15003hs.* (Oahu high school complexes with augmented dbf; thematic view)
• 15003a.* (Oahu K-12 administrative districts)
• 15003p.* (Oahu places)
• 15003t.* (Oahu tracts)
• 15003bg.* (Oahu block groups)
• 15003blk.* (Oahu census blocks)
• 15003r.* (Oahu roads)
• schl15.* (public schools statewide)
Notes: 1 -- No K-12 admin, place, tract, block group, nor block statitsical data are provided.
2 -- When the project opens, only three themes are selected.

Additional instructions might be provided at a later time depending on feedback and expressions of interest. Send questions or comments concerning use of this application setup to Proximity support for assistance with use of these files.
