Overview. Topeka Public Schools Unified School District 501 is located in Shawnee County (20177) and Topeka, KS metro ( 45820). The population of Topeka Public Schools Unified School District 501 changed from 98,310 in 2010 to 98,543 in 2015; a change of 233 (0.2%). The metro population changed from 234,279 to 233,791, a change of -488 (-0.2%) during the same period. As of 2015, the population of Topeka Public Schools Unified School District 501 represented 42.2% of the metro total population.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 1-year estimates the district total resident population was 99,108. The population of one race include 79.6% White alone, 9.9% Black alone, 1.3% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 0.8% Asian alone, and 0.3% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 17.9% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02 below.

Among the 21,830 family households, 17.1% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 22.5% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Education. Of the 24,068 district population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 10,601 were enrolled in grades K-8. 02. ACS Demographic-Economic Estimates
Reference to "with ACS 1-year data" means that 02 sections of the report use ACS 1-year estimates (available district 65,000 population and over). Where there is no ACS reference, ACS 5-year data are used (available for all districts). In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the district based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for districts which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 district geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
23 = Suburb, Small: area outside PC & inside UA & population < 100,000.
31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
