Overview. Springfield School District 186 is located in Sangamon County (17167) and Springfield, IL metro ( 44100). The population of Springfield School District 186 changed from 114,268 in 2010 to 114,785 in 2015; a change of 517 (0.5%). The metro population changed from 210,504 to 211,156, a change of 652 (0.3%) during the same period. As of 2015, the population of Springfield School District 186 represented 54.4% of the metro total population.

Race/Ethnicity. Based on the most recent ACS 2015 5-year estimates the district total resident population was 113,470. The population of one race include 73.8% White alone, 20.2% Black alone, 0.2% American Indian/Alaska Native alone, 1.8% Asian alone, and 0.0% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander alone. The Hispanic population (of any race) was 2.4% of the total population. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02 below.

Housing, Households, Economic Situation. Of the district 56,325 total housing units, 50,304 were occupied housing units (households) or 89.3% of total units. Of the 30,470 owner-occupied units, the median housing value was $100,500. Of the 30,470 renter-occupied units paying rent, the median rent was $733. Among the 26,890 family households, 16.4% had income below poverty level in the previous year. Among the total population, 22.1% had income below poverty level in the previous year. The district median household income was $43,902 with median family income of $59,103. These characteristics are based on more detailed data in section 02 below.

Education. Of the 27,273 district population 3 years and over enrolled in school, 12,871 were enrolled in grades K-8. 02. ACS Demographic-Economic Estimates
Reference to "with ACS 1-year data" means that 02 sections of the report use ACS 1-year estimates (available district 65,000 population and over). Where there is no ACS reference, ACS 5-year data are used (available for all districts). In general, the 1-year estimates should be used when available (more recent, more accurate) but there are reasons to prefer the 5-year estimates even when 1-year estimates are available. Urban/Rural & Locale Code
The percent urban value in the Oveview is computed as the ratio of the population in urban census blocks to the total population in the district based on Census 2010 SF1. No adjustment is made for districts which may have changed boundaries since 2010. If the Census 2010 district geocode does not match to a ACS 2015 geocode, the percent urban is shown as NA.

Local code (defined by the Department of Education):
where UA: Urbanized Area; UC: Urban Cluster; PC: Principal City
11 = City, Large: area inside UA & inside PC & population >= 250,000.
12 = City, Midsize: area inside UA & inside PC & population 100,000-250,000.
13 = City, Small: area inside UA & inside PC & population < 100,000.
21 = Suburb, Large: area outside PC & inside UA & population >= 250,000.
22 = Suburb, Midsize: area outside PC & inside UA & population 100,000-250,000.
23 = Suburb, Small: area outside PC & inside UA & population < 100,000.
31 = Town, Fringe: area inside UC that is <= 10 miles from UA.
