Workshops Main Page Geospatial Solutions Census 2000 & Updating Geodemographics |
Using GIS and GeoDemographic Analysis Participate in this workshop and learn how to most effectively use mapping and geographic information system (GIS) tools to develop compelling maps and perform geospatial analysis. Learn to effectively use the CommunityViewer (CV) GIS software for geodemographic mapping and analysis. Create maps that appear the way you want them and convey your message most effectively. Learn how to use GIS tools to analyze patterns. Learn how to build and use map projects designed to meet your needs. Learn how to import and integrate geographic and subject matter data. Learn how to geocode your address-related data and then view those data in maps. Who Should Attend Participants are from public and private sector organizations including business, government, academia, associations and other entities. Participants include planners, journalists, students, information specialists, managers, analysts, statisticians, GIS specialists and others who need to better utilize data driven decision making tools. There are no prerequisites required for this session. Bring Your Laptop Participants will receive resource materials in advance of the workshop. Load the software and data onto your laptop and preview the materials before the workshop. During the session you will use the applications on your own computer. Upon return to your office, you will have the original resources, plus those you develop during the session, for your continued use. Benefits and What You will Receive Computer hands-on sessions Effective Use of GeoDemographics & GIS CommunityViewer User's Guide Learn about accessing and using national to local demographics How to access and use major Web-accessible Federal statistical data resources Receive map and demographic data files for your permanent use Receive CommunityViewer GIS (CV1) software Receive TLFGeocoder software Learn about methodologies for accessing and integrating key multi-sourced geographic, demographic, business data Learn how to apply tools, methods & data for trend & impact analysis Learn how to better interpret data & make compelling presentations Training on use of CommunityViewer GIS software Agenda 8:30 – 9:00 Registration 9:00 – 10:15 Morning Session Using CommunityViewer -- Overview Roadmap to this Session Resources used in this Session - Software and Data Files - CommunityViewer User's Guide Using CommunityViewer -- Hands-On Operations Role and Use of CommunityViewer Starting CV and Opening a Project CV User Interface Files Used with CV Shapefile architecture Using database files Project Content and Management Setting analysis and presentation objectives Making compelling presentations Adding and Deleting Layers Layer Editor Operations Layer caption/name Sections Renderer Line Label Chart Creating a Project Building Project 2 from Scratch – step-by-step Adding layers Using GetWebGeodata: Web Access to TIGER and shapefiles Ordering Layers Using the Layer Editor Saving the Project 10:15 – 10:30 Break Thematic Mapping Design: Making Your Point; Assessing the Right Pattern Starting with a Layer Containing Required Subject Matter Adding Subject Matter Fields to a Layer (Shapefile) Integrating data from FactFinder Integrating data from Excel – using Database|XLS to DBF dBMerge: merging fields from source files to new file (dbase) Using the Layer Editor to Define/Manage Sections (intervals) Presentation: Design and Output Your Audience and Objectives Stylizing: Charts and Patterns Labeling and Annotation Using MapView|Colors Project Versions: Different Views to Meet Different Needs Site Analysis Using the Identify tool Tools|Site Analysis feature Using Database|TractDemographics Using Database|BlockGroupDemographics 12:00 – 1:00 Lunch Break 1:00 – 3:00 Afternoon Session Query Operations and Exporting Data Using dBrowser Using Tools|FindShape Using Tools|FindZIP Using File|Export: Shapefile Subsetting Reports and Tabular Output Tract/Market DP1-DP1 Demographic Profiles TIGER/Line Files: U.S. Digital Map Database About TIGER/Line Files and Your Benefits Structure Access and Use Vintages Create County by Tract Shapefile from TIGER (hands-on, your county of interest) Using TIGER/Line files Using File|GetWebGeodata: add TLF Directly to Project Using Layer Editor to View Selected Feature Types (eg only Interstate) Using File|Export to Create Shapefiles Adding newly created shapefiles to a project Creating Cross-Reference/Equivalence Files Map View Output Options: Saving, Viewing, and Using Map Graphics Saving Map Views Annotating Saved Graphics for Presentations Viewing Saved Graphics 3:00 – 3:15 Break Creating Shapefiles: Using Tools|Add Operations Simultaneous Point and Polygon Shapefiles Point Shapefiles Polygon Shapefiles Point File Operations Using Tools|Summarize Using Tools|Summarize Students Using Reports|Tract/Market Geocoding Address Data: Using Tools|Geocoder Address-related data: development and structure Streets base file for address matching Address matching and geocoding process Creating point shapefiles and adding to project Summarizing (aggregating) point shapefile data to polygon shapefile areas Using GeoEditor GeoEditor Toolbar – review of operations Creating a polygon shapefile file Splitting a polygon in a shapefile Combine polygons in a shapefile Dissolving elemental shapes in a shapefile Performing summarize operation Viewing fields in a selected layer dbf Performing a query for visual lookup/editing based on a field value CV Extensions: Modeler Developing estimates and projections Using Shp2Xml Adding shapefile geography to interactive Google maps Accessing demographics via enhanced interactive Google maps Discussion of Selected Topics 5:00 Adjourn About CommunityViewer GIS The Proximity CommunityViewer (CV) GIS software to meet wide-ranging needs for geodemographic analysis.
