U.S. K-12 School Interactive Analysis
Proximity helps schools, school districts, education agencies, K-12 education stakeholders and others develop, integrate and use geodemographics and related decision-making information. This section provides access to an interactive analysis tool to sort and view characteristics of schools based on the most recent (2006-07) national scope data.
Update 2/16/10. State-by-state K-12 schools ranking tables using 2008-09 school year data are now available. See Texas schools ... then choose any state using links in left column on that page. Use CommunityViewer with the all U.S. schools shapefile to view/analyze schools with certain attributes such as the view at right showing KC MSA/area schools. Click graphic for larger view. Urban areas are shown as orange fill pattern. School markers: green <500, red 500-1000, blue >1000 students. These data are provided in an experimental mode. Typically, the data grid will require 30 seconds to initially load. If your interests are confined to one state, the first step should be to select the state of interest. See usage notes. Usage Notes Load time. The software/method used/ for table operations can take a while to process a load or a query. Be patient. If a message appears about an unresponsive script, reply continue. Looking for characteristics of one school. While the Find tool can be used to locate a school, it may be preferred to 1) select the state, 2) sort on district name or zip code, and 3) use scroll bar at right to locate the school. This way, the school is presented in context of other schools in the district or in the zip code vicinity. Using the Block Group Measures. A census tract is an area with an average population of 4,000. A block group is a subset of a census tract with an average population of 1,000. Typically, a school with a large enrollment size would have an attendance zone that covers multiple census tracts and many block groups. Items 11-14 are derived from one block group, so they are more accurate for a school with a small attendance area like for an elementary school, and may be less relevant for a large attendance zone area that may include 10 or more census tracts. If this situation applies ... if you know what elementary/middle schools feed in to a high school, then you can get measures for component areas (block groups relating to elementary schools) that relate to a high school. The less spread between the values of multiple feeder campuses, the more homogeneous the high school attendance zone. |
