School District Changing Patterns: School Level

The demographic composition and size of many schools have changed dramatically since Census 2000. Maps and data provided in this section provide insights into these changes -- where are the changes occurring and by how much.

These maps have been developed through the use of the Proximity SDViewer (School District Viewer). Use the SDViewer software and database on your own computer to achieve maximum flexibility in viewing characteristics of schools in regions of interest.

The graphic presented below shows schools which experienced an enrollment change decrease between 1999-00 to 2002-03 of -20% or more located in the contiguous 48 states. State and metropolitan statistical area boundaries are also shown.

Background. Data used in these analyses have been derived from the U.S. Department of Education data reported by state and local education agencies. The data include only regular public schools in operation as of 2002-03 (86,313 schools). So that the schools are comparable over time, a school must have 1999-00 and 2002-03 enrollment greater than zero and must provide education for the same low and high grades in each year (64,100 schools). 4,021 schools in that set meet the further criteria of a -20-percent or more decrease in enrollment over the period. 3,609 schools had a 20-percent or more increase.

Closer Views. Zoom-in views, such as the one shown below for the Kansas City, MO-KS MSA, can be displayed using SDViewer. District and MSA boundaries are easier to identify at this level of geography. The identify tool can be used to view a school's attributes. Schools increasing in enrollment by 20-percent or more (blue) and decreasing by -20-percent or more (red) during 1999-2000 and 2002-03 are shown in this view. As shown in the profile, the percent change in enrollment from 1999-00 to 2002-03 for the school profiled is -28.77%.

The identify tool can also be used to profile any school district. The next view shows a profile of Belton 124 Schools where the school shown above is located.
