Children's Demographics Database

The Children's Demographics Database (CDD) contains the most current and detailed children's demographic data and data on children's living environment available. Developed by Proximity from the Census 2000 school district special tabulation, the national scope database provides data for each school district in the U.S.

Proximity provides comprehensive services to make use of these data: online access to the data for analytical use, the underlying database files for use on your computer, integration of these data with other-sourced data, software to perform custom structured displays and analysis, training and presentations on use of the data, and analyses of these data.

How Data in the CDD Can be Used. The sample profile at the right is used to describe how the CDD data can be used. There are two key topics: 1) how are these data organized so that you can make use of them and 2) what types of insights can be gained from using the data. Click on the link at the right so that you can view the spreadsheet graphic. A separate page will appear.

This profile presents selected data from the "Children's Own" CDD data file (see separate file description) for the Kalani High School Complex Area, Hawaii (view maps of the Kalani area). Data were tabulated in the School District Special Tabulation for Hawaii high school complex areas as if these areas were regular school districts. The same data presented here are available for each school district in the U.S., provided the area meets minimum threshold size for tabulation eligibility. (There must be 50 children in the school district area for the data record to be tabulated; 13,559 school district tabulation areas of total 14,286 meet this criteria.)
  1. Data organization. Data for two tables from the Children's Own database are presented in this spreadsheet: Children by Race (P6) and Children by Poverty Status (P87). More than a hundred tables are available to choose from as further described below. Each data table is comprised of several items (6 items for Table P6 and 17 items for Table P87). Table/item description are presented as stubs in the first column of the spreadsheet.

Six data column sets are presented. The data column sets correspond to "type of enrollment record/universes of tabulation."

    1. Total Children
    2. Relevant Children – Enrolled and Not Enrolled
    3. Relevant Children – Enrolled (Public and Private)
    4. Relevant Children – Enrolled Public
    5. Relevant Children – Enrolled Private
    6. Relevant Children - Not Enrolled

These universes are further described in the school district special tabulation general description.

Total children definition. The 2000 SDST defines a child as a person age 0 to 17 (as of April 1, 2000) or a person age 18 or 19 who is not a high school graduate (based on the educational attainment response from the Census 2000 questionnaire).

Relevant children definition. A child is relevant to a school district if he/she lives within the territory of the district and his/her assigned grade falls within the grade range provided by a district.

Reading the Data. Viewing the spreadsheet, it can be observed, for example, that the following number of persons (as of Census 2000) were Asian children in this school district tabulation area:

    1. Total Children ... 3,315
    2. Relevant Children – Enrolled and Not Enrolled ... 2,990
    3. Relevant Children – Enrolled (Public and Private)... 2,920
    4. Relevant Children – Enrolled Public ... 1,480
    5. Relevant Children – Enrolled Private ... 1,440
    6. Relevant Children – Not Enrolled ... 70

  2. Insights from the data. The SDST-CDD data are the only source of data that enable stakeholders to determine the number of children enrolled in private and public school and compare attributes of those enrolled public, those enrolled private, and those not enrolled.

As of Census 2000, how many children live in this school district area that attend school? (total relevant enrolled = 5,950). How many children are enrolled in public school? (total relevant children enrolled public = 2,790) How many children are enrolled in private school? (total relevant children enrolled private = 3,160)

Using these data, analysts are enabled to answer questions like "how do the summary data for those enrolled in public school compare to those enrolled in private school?" Similarly, as not enrolled at all can be an important measure, "what is the magnitude (proportion) of children not enrolled in school?"

Other within district comparison measures are possible. For example, it can be observed by viewing the spreadsheet that approximately 53 percent of children enrolled in public school were Asian whereas approximately 46 percent of children enrolled in private school were Asian.
Houston, TX (click to view)
Choosing Subject Matter Data for Analysis. While it could have been so structured, the Kalani spreadsheet does not show summary data for the Latino/Hispanic population. As of Census 2000, there were 445 Latino children of the total 6,960 children. The size and distribution of the Latino children might be an area of study interest more in some districts than others. The number of Latino/Hispanic persons is provided by Table P7 (among others) in the CDD.

The graphic at the right "Houston, TX" (Houston Independent School District) shows data similar to that as presented for Kalani. Rather than using Table P6, Table P7 is shown. This table shows the combined race/ethnic categories and might be more useful for Houston than P6. 53-percent of children are Latino/Hispanic. Compare the Kalani and Houston spreadsheets. In Kalani, children are enrolled in roughly equal parts public and private. There are few children not enrolled. Contrast this to Houston where the large majority of children enrolled are enrolled in public school. Note that the data on children not enrolled takes on new importance -- there are approximately 36,000 relevant children not enrolled in school in the Houston school district (approximately 25,000 of this group are Latino)

Table P87 shows how the data can be used to gain insights as to poverty incidence and how different segments of the population are impacted. As shown in the spreadsheet for the Houston Independent School District, overall, 29-percent of children are living below poverty level. 31-percent of children enrolled in public school are living below poverty level. 37-percent of children not enrolled in school are living below poverty level.

What Data Are Available in CDD? See the listing of data tables developed for the Census 2000 School District Tabulation. This is the "master" set of tables. Not all tables are available for the children's universes tabulations.

To determine which tables are available for the tabulation universes, see the tabulation record/table correspondence charts. Table numbers are listed in the left column. The header shows the type of tabulation universe. The spreadsheets shown in the examples reviewed on this Web page contain data taken only from "CO". You can see, for example, that tables P3 and P4 are not available for CO, but are available for other tabulation universes. If you are seeking data on children receiving public assistance, you first need to determine which tables contain these data (listing of data tables) and then see if that table is available in the tabulation universe of interest.

CDD File Structures The CDD contains 27 types of files. Each file contains records corresponding to school districts for different tabulation universes and include different types of subject matter fields The 27 record/file types are summarized in the table presented below.
