Feature summary: operates with Summary File 1 and 3 permits user to select items from master summary file database (rather than using a fixed set of items) will be extended to work with subsequent Census 2000 summary files operates in batch mode (permitting many shapefile sets to be processed without user interaction) processes data for a wider variety of geography (counties, places, school districts, etc.) help/support provided by telephone, e-mail, and Web clients may attend workshop sessions for training interfaces with other ProximityOne suite software components To order Cen2Shp, click here. Purpose/Benefits. The purpose of the Cen2Shp software is to provide the easiest and least costly way to automatically associate/link/integrate demographic data contained in the Census 2000 files with the corresponding map polygon for each area (such as a census tract). After the demographic data are integrated into the map file dbf's, mapping software can be used to prepare thematic maps based on the demographic data. The demographic data are integrated into the map file dbf (in shapefile format) by Cen2Shp. A "shapefile dbf" is defined as the dBase file that is a part of the basic shapefile set of files. The shapefile set includes a .shp, .shx, and .dbf file. ProximityOne Component. Cen2Shp is a standalone, integratable, component of the ProximityOne software suite. Use Cen2Shp with other ProximityOne components or as a standalone program. Census 2000 Data Access and Use. Cen2Shp may be used to process all Census 2000 demographic data downloaded/processed from the Census web server (freely accessed data) using the ProximityOne ASC2DBF software. Ordering Information. To order Cen2Shp, use the Proximity Registration and Order Form. Data Requirements/Preparations. This subsection describes the data requirements and preparations to make use of the Cen2Shp non-commercial version. The non-commercial version works only with the P.L. 94-171 data files. Procedural steps for the commercial version are provided separately but are similar to those described here. Use of the Cen2Shp assumes that you have the shapefiles and PL321 version of the P.L. 94-171 data for the state of interest. You can download the shapefiles from Proximity and generate the PL321 data file using the Proximity ASC2DBF software. In the describing how to use Cen2Shp, we make use of the shapefile set for Honolulu County, HI -- the shapefile m15003t.* (.shp, .shx, .dbf). As described below, the m15003t.* file set is provided with the Cen2Shp installation file. You will need to have the corresponding file set for your area of interest to use Cen2Shp and follow similar procedures in using these files. In this file set, 15 is the FIPS state code for Hawaii, 003 is the FIPS county code for Honolulu County, and t represents tracts. This nomenclature is used with all of the Proximity downloadable map files. Limitations. The non-commercial version of Cen2Shp works only with 1) county by 2000 census block group shapefiles, and 2) county by census tract shapefiles. Additional types of shapefiles are supported by the commercial version. Using the Software
