School Demographic Analysis This graphic shows a portion of the SDA side-by-side comparative analysis profile for the four non-charter high schools in the Alief Independent School District located in Houston, Texas. Using this profile it is easy to compare attributes of the selected schools. The profile is also automatically written as an Excel file. See this example. The lower section of the profile shows attributes of the census block group where the school is located. In this example, two of the schools are located in block group (BG) 2 of census tract 452500 located in Harris County (201) Texas (48). The other two schools are located in block group 2 of census tract 452700. The profile shows selected demographic attributes for the block group where the school is located and for any other (one each in this exmaple) block group in the same census tract. These data show that Kerr and Taylor are located in BGs with a higher percent of high school graduates in the "school district community" and a much lower poverty rate than the other two high schools. More About the School Location Block Group. The "School Location Block Group" is the census block group which contains the school based on the school address. Demographics are always shown for at least one census block group (the "close in" neighborhood). Demographics for "Adjacent Block Group" area(s) will also be shown for all other block group areas located in the same census tract as the school. Block groups average 1,000 population. Census tracts average 4,000 population. On average, there will be a mini-demographic profile provided for the "School Location Block Group" and three "Adjacent Block Groups." If a census tract contains only one block group, only one block group mini-profile is shown. The identification of school location block groups and adjacent block groups is independent of the school location with regard to an attendance zone or the school district boundary. The objective is to characterize/provide demographics for/ the immediate area (neighborhood) where the school is located. While a single block group or a set of block groups in a census tract might do this adequately for an elementary school, more information might be desired for high schools which relate to a much larger area -- often 15 or more census tracts. |
