The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is the primary federal entity for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on the condition of American education. It does this through a series of extensive surveys and data collection programs, which can be grouped by the level of education they cover.
Here is a list of some of NCES's key programs:
Elementary and Secondary Education
• | Common Core of Data (CCD): An annual collection of public school data from state education agencies, providing comprehensive information on all public elementary and secondary schools and school districts in the U.S. |
• | National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP): Often called "The Nation's Report Card," NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subjects. |
• | Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS): A series of studies that follow cohorts of children from birth through elementary school, examining their development, school readiness, and early school experiences. |
• | High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09): A study that follows a cohort of ninth-graders to track their educational and career trajectories. |
• | National Household Education Surveys Program (NHES): A household-based data collection system that gathers data on a variety of education-related topics, such as early childhood program participation and parent involvement in education. |
• | School Survey on Crime and Safety (SSOCS): A survey that provides data on crime and safety in public elementary and secondary schools. |
Postsecondary Education
• | Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS): This is the core postsecondary data collection program, gathering information on enrollments, program completions, graduation rates, faculty and staff, finances, and institutional prices from all U.S. colleges, universities, and technical institutions. |
• | National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS): A comprehensive study of how students and their families pay for postsecondary education, including information on financial aid, student loans, and grants. |
• | Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B): A study that follows a cohort of college graduates to track their entry into the workforce and further education. |
International Assessments
• | Program for International Student Assessment (PISA): A study that assesses the knowledge and skills of 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics, and science literacy, allowing for international comparisons. |
• | Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS): An assessment of mathematics and science achievement of fourth- and eighth-grade students, conducted every four years. |
• | Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS): Measures the reading literacy achievement of fourth-grade students, also providing an international comparison. |
Other Programs
• | Library Statistics Program: Collects data on public libraries in the United States. |
• | Programs for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC): An international study that assesses the key cognitive and workplace skills of adults. |
• | Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS) Grant Program: While NCES is not a grant-making agency, it has supported states in designing and implementing systems that link data across various educational levels to better inform policy and practice. |
