2020 and 2024 Medicare Enrollment Data

The total number of people enrolled in Medicare, as well as the breakdown between Original Medicare (Part A and B) and Medicare Advantage, has changed significantly between 2020 and 2024. The trend shows a continued shift towards Medicare Advantage plans.

2020 Enrollment

Total Medicare Enrollment: Approximately 62.5 million people were enrolled in Medicare.
Original Medicare (Parts A & B): About 34 million beneficiaries were enrolled in Original Medicare. This represented around 54.5% of the total Medicare population.
Medicare Advantage (Part C): Approximately 25.1 million beneficiaries were enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. This accounted for about 40% of the total Medicare population.

2024 Enrollment

Total Medicare Enrollment: The total number of people enrolled in Medicare had grown to approximately 67.98 million.
Original Medicare (Parts A & B): The number of people in Original Medicare had decreased to roughly 33.2 million. The percentage of total Medicare beneficiaries in Original Medicare had dropped to around 50%.
Medicare Advantage (Part C): Enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans grew to 32.8 million beneficiaries. This meant that for the first time, Medicare Advantage enrollment surpassed 50% of the total Medicare-eligible population.

Key Trends from 2020 to 2024:

Overall Growth: The total Medicare population grew by millions of people as more Americans became eligible.
Shift to Medicare Advantage: The most significant trend was the substantial growth of Medicare Advantage. In 2020, Original Medicare was still the dominant choice, but by 2024, Medicare Advantage had become the more popular option. This shift is a key focus for policy makers and healthcare providers.
Decline in Original Medicare: While the total Medicare population grew, the number of beneficiaries enrolled in Original Medicare (fee-for-service) actually saw a decline.
