The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Statistical Programs

NIST's statistical work is concentrated in the Statistical Engineering Division (SED), which is part of the Information Technology Laboratory. This division's core mission is to develop and apply statistical and probabilistic methods to support research in measurement science, technology, and the production of standard reference materials.

Key aspects of their statistical programs include:

Consulting and Collaboration: The SED provides statistical expertise to other NIST divisions and external partners from industry and academia, helping to design experiments, analyze data, and quantify uncertainty.
Statistical Software and Resources: NIST develops and provides a range of statistical tools and datasets to the public. Notable examples include the NIST/SEMATECH e-Handbook of Statistical Methods (a web-based guide) and Statistical Reference Datasets (StRD), which are used to test the accuracy of statistical software.
Research: The division conducts fundamental and applied statistical research on problems in metrology and collaborates on projects related to artificial intelligence, forensic science, and advanced manufacturing.
