Bureau of Transportation Statistics
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) is the principal federal statistical agency for transportation. Like other statistical agencies, it does not run public "programs" in the sense of grants or services. Instead, its work consists of a wide variety of data collection, analysis, and reporting programs that provide key statistics about the U.S. transportation system.
These programs cover various aspects of transportation, including:
Freight and Passenger Movement
• | Freight Analysis Framework (FAF): A comprehensive database that estimates freight flows (tonnage and value) among states and metropolitan areas, and across different transportation modes. |
• | TransBorder Freight Data: This program provides data on the value and weight of freight moving between the U.S. and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, Canada and Mexico, by truck, rail, air, and vessel. |
• | National Household Travel Survey (NHTS): This survey collects data on the daily and long-distance travel of the American public, including trip purpose, length, mode of travel, and household characteristics. |
• | National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD): A collection of national-level geospatial datasets related to transportation, including information on roads, railroads, airports, and waterways. |
• | Port Performance Freight Statistics Program: This program collects and analyzes statistics to provide information on the performance of the nation's largest ports. |
Aviation
• | Airline On-Time Performance Data: This is a well-known program that publishes data on the timeliness of flights, including delays, cancellations, and diversions. |
• | Airline Origin and Destination Survey (DB1B): A comprehensive survey that provides data on passenger travel patterns and fares. |
• | Airline Financial Data (Form 41): This program collects and publishes detailed financial information on large U.S. air carriers. |
• | Air Travel Consumer Report: Produced in partnership with the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection, this report provides monthly statistics on a range of topics, including flight delays, mishandled baggage, and consumer complaints. |
Cross-Cutting and Economic Statistics
• | Monthly Transportation Statistics: A monthly report that provides a snapshot of the U.S. transportation system by presenting key statistics on passenger travel, freight, and the transportation economy. |
• | Transportation Services Index (TSI): A monthly measure of the volume of services provided by the for-hire transportation industry. |
• | National Transportation Statistics: An annual report that provides an overview of the U.S. transportation system through a series of statistical tables and data. |
• | Pocket Guide to Transportation: An annual summary of key transportation data and trends. |
• | Transportation Public Finance Statistics (TPFS): This program provides information on transportation-related revenues and expenditures for all levels of government. |
