A voting district tabulation is a geographic area, often the same as an election precinct, that is used to collect and report election results. The U.S. Census Bureau uses the term "Voting Tabulation District" (VTD) to refer to these areas.
In the context of elections, "tabulation" is the process of counting votes from ballots and generating reports of the totals. This process can be done manually by hand-counting ballots, or, more commonly, with the use of electronic machines that scan and read paper ballots.
A voting district tabulation refers to the collection of election data and the reporting of vote totals for a specific, defined geographic area.
VTDs may vary over time. Census 2020 VTDs were defined/frozen in most states (excluding California and Oregon) in 2019 and used as a Census 2020 tabulation area.
VTD shapefiles are available in the 2021 TIGER.
