Examining the Largest Population Census 2010 Census Blocks
Of the more than 11 million census tabulation blocks for Census 2010, almost 10,000 have a population of more than 1,000.
These 9,777 census blocks contain a population of 14,015,293.
The census block with the largest has population of 19,352 and is located in Norfolk, VA.
Why does the location and distribution of these heavily populated census blocks matter? The size of the population alone in these census blocks means that there are special types of demographic patterns in the immediate vicinity of these blocks in comparison of the average or even larger populated census blocks. The special types of demographic patterns are not necessarily good or bad, do not necessarily result in special needs, or necessarily offer important business or economic development opportunities. But many do! They warrant examination in each of these regards and others. Diversity of the population of these census blocks is extreme. They include the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD to Folsom Prison, CA to large, more traditional, residential structures. While many are group quarters population, and show zero or near-zero housing units, many others are non-group quarters population. Some are highly affluent; others have populations with very little income. Many have dependencies and connections in a multi-block or city-wide setting; others have relatively little connectivity with the extended set of blocks nearby. The geographic distribution of these census blocks, as shown in the map views below, is widespread. Click expanding sections to view maps. |
