Census 2000 Geographic Identification Code Scheme


The Census 2000 Geographic Identification Code Scheme (GICS) provides an integrated listing of counties, MCD/CCDs, places/CDPs, and remainder of MCD/CCD for each of these types geographic areas for the state. For each of these areas, the GICS provides the summary level code, FIPS code for each type of geography, name of the area, and the Census 2000 population and housing counts. The GICS is structured in dbase and contains approximately 101,000 records.

Uses. Use the GICS for applications including:

  • Extract county records in a state (or US) showing geocodes,
    area name, and population and housing counts.
  • Extract MCD/CCD records in a state (or US) showing geocodes,
    area name, and population and housing counts.
  • Extract place/city records in a state (or US) showing geocodes,
    area name, and population and housing counts.
  • View county geographic composition as geographic hierarchy:
    MCD/CCD, places with MCD/CCD, remainder of MCD/CCD.

How to Acquire the GICS. The GICS is available on a no-fee basis to participants in the GeoDemographics WebCourse or for $85 otherwise.
