Support & Help Using APIGeocoder

Use the ProximityOne APIGeocoder to geocode addresses for locations anywhere in the world. Code one address or batch code thousands of addresses using data files. The APIGeocoder returns your address data record with appended latitude, longitude, geocode and optionally demographic-economic attributes. A ready-to-use shapefile/KML file is created that may be used in GIS applications using CV XE GIS, ArcGIS, Google maps or your preferred geospatial software. Ordering information.

Geocoding within the United States
... within U.S. geocoding ... determine the census block, census tract and other geographies for most any U.S. street address, and its demographic-economic characteristics, using the no fee APIGeocoder. Geocoding is the process of converting address-oriented data into a structure that enables showing those addresses as markers on a map. The graphic presented below illustrates how an address (7500 Mission Rd, Shawnee Mission, KS 66208) can be shown as a marker (see pointer) in context of roads and other geography. This address is located in a block group area with median household income of $46,372 and median housing value of $168,800 as determined by APIGeocoder. See in third graphic below. This section provides an overview of the ProximityOne APIGeocoder, a Windows-based software tool that can be used to geocode addresses ... and optionally much more.

Do you need geocoding but prefer a service? Contact us to discuss your needs. We provide geocoding services and optionally development of geocoded marker shapefiles, integrated with other data in a ready-to-use GIS application.

Address/Location in Context of Related Geography

See related drill-down view.

Benefits of APIGeocoder ... Geocoding and geocoding results are much more than this (converting addresses into a structure for map display) and enable far-reaching location, routing and pattern analysis. Entering one address at a time can be useful in some situations. But generally, there is an interest in geocoding hundreds to many thousands of addresses -- and saving the geocoded results for reuse. An association might geocode its members; a business its customers; a school district its schools, teachers, mentors, students; a healthcare practitioner its clients. Additional codes then enable the data to be viewed in a map to examine patterns. Answering questions ... where do certain types/markers cluster? What areas seem to have voids/no activity? What are prospective problem spots? How are the addresses, as a set, changing over time? How do this years patterns compare to last years? What is trending?

APIGeocoder ... installing APIGeocoder and getting started
The ProximityOne APIGeocoder is a tool that you can use to address code your address-oriented data. APIGeocoder uses API technology to determine, and then assign, latitude-longitude values to the address. APIGeocoder also determines and assigns other codes useful for Geographic Information System (GIS) applications. APIGeocoder is a companion tool for use with the CV XE GIS software. But more generally, APIGeocoder can be used to develop geocoded data with any GIS software. The basic APIGeocoder is available at no fee. Buy APIGeocoder Level 2 to receive more capabilities and application support.

Start-up View of APIGeocoder -- scroll section
The following graphic shows an address in the left group box.

Geocode Results -- scroll section
Clicking the CodeOne (see pointer), geocoded characteristics of this address are shown in the right group box. Scroll down to view descriptions of geocoded results.

Clicking the HTML button (top right) generates an HTML page:

Click graphic for full HTML view.

When using the BatchCode feature, the address file is updated with geocode results. View the illustrative 28 record address file (addr1.dbf) with geocoded -- excel file.

Latitude-Longitude. The latitude and longitude are shown as well as the "TIGERline TLID", "Side", "GEOID" and selected subject matter items. The latitude-longitude are essential data to create the point shapefile used to create a map like that shown at the top of this section.

TIGERline TLID. The TIGERline TLID is the code that is the unique identifier in the TIGER/Line database. It tells the user the code for the intersection-to-intersection road segment where the address is located.

Side. The Side code tells the user which side of that road segment contains the address.

GEOID. The GEOID is the geocode that identifies the census block in which the address is located. The GEOID is a 15 character string that identifies the state, county, census tract and census block. From these codes wide-ranging other geographic areas can be identified. This can tell the user, for example, the school district, state legislative district and congressional district (among others) is located ... or whether the address is urban or rural. By knowing the GEOID, other software can associate attributes, like median household income for the corresponding block group, to this address.

BG $MHI. Median Household Income from ACS 2012 5 year estimates for the block group in which the address is located.

BG $MHV. Median Housing Value from ACS 2012 5 year estimates for the block group in which the address is located.

Try it Yourself
Install the APIGeocoder and key in an address in the Input Address section. ID and Name are not required. Then click the "CodeOne" button to view the Geocoded Results. There are rules for entering the input address.

This section provides basic information on the operation of APIGeocoder.
User Interface/Form Components
Click view user interface window.
  • Address File -- edit box shows name of active address file.
-- two demo address files are provided with installer:
      - addr1.dbf (opened at start-up) -- contains 28 records.
      - addr2.dbf 2 record subset of addr1.dbf.
  • Open (Address File) -- click to open a different address file.
  • BatchCode -- automatically codes every address record in the Address File.
  • CodeOne -- codes only the presently loaded Input Address section.
  • Clear -- clears all edit boxes on form.

Address/Location in Context of Related Geography -- drill-down & road segments
The graphic shown below is a drill-down view of the graphic shown at the top of this page. This view illustrates the location of the address (green marker, location as determined by APIGeocoder) in context with corresponding
TIGER/Line road segment (see pointer). This segment of Mission Rd. runs between the intersections at W. 75th St. and W. 76th St. This structure is typical o the relationship between addresses and TIGER/Line road segments.

The view below is developed using the CV XE GIS. The identify tool is used to click on the road segment which displays the mini-profile for that road segment. Note that the profile shows that the TLID identifier is 90279106. The TLID code uniquely identifies this road segment among all other 45 million road segments. Separate from this view/operation, the TLID code has also been determined by APIGeocoder when coding the address. See APIGeocoder form view for this address.
