Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

SNAP is operated by the USDA/FNS.  But important data about SNAP recipients are provided from the Census Bureau ACS program.

Summary of ACS Data for/about SNAP:

The American Community Survey (ACS) collects data on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, primarily in its Detailed Tables (which have "B" and "C" prefixes) and Subject Tables (which have an "S" prefix) related to public assistance and income.

Here are some of the key SNAP-related tables in the ACS:

1. Detailed Tables (B and C Series)

These tables provide the most granular estimates. The public assistance tables are generally in the B22000 series:

Note: Tables starting with "C" (e.g., C22001) are "collapsed" versions of the "B" tables, which have less detail but are sometimes used to ensure better data quality for small geographies.

2. Subject Tables (S Series)

Subject tables combine popular statistics from detailed tables into an easier-to-digest format, often including percentages and various related topics.
