How many students are within 0.5 miles of a school?  Use the CV Site Analysis tool to perform this operation.

An Example.  A CommunityViewer GIS project has been developed.  The CommunityViewer site analysis tool is been started and used on a student layer.  A half-mile radius is selected about a school.  The school is shown a red triangle marker.  Students meeting the query criteria (all in this example) are shown with cross hatching.  Student locations are show in context to attendance zone (background color) and tax parcels.  The number of students for this analysis is 286 (upper right).  The student id codes are listed lower right.
