What are the current characteristics of an industry of interest in an area of interest? How is it changing? How might this impact you? Providing insights into those topics is the purpose of this section.

For a typical larger county, quarterly establishments, employment and wages are tabulated for approximately 2,000 types of businesses or sectors. This profile shows characteristics of one of these, a selected sector, and how it is changing and how it compares to total establishments in that area (county) and higher level geography. To view this sector as a row among all other sectors in this area (e.g. county, metro, state), use the DEDE Situation & Outlook report Section 3.1 or create/view a downloadable dataset using the DEDE custom dataset extraction feature.

The following table shows characteristics for the selected type of business (NAICS/sector) for the selected area in column 1 compared total businesses (all sectors) for that same selected area in column 2).

Location Quotients
Location quotients compare the concentration of an industry within a specific area to the concentration of that industry nationwide. Location quotients are ratios that allow an area's distribution of employment by industry, ownership, and size class to be compared to a reference area's distribution. The U.S. is used as the reference area for all LQs.

Consider the LQ for employment. If an LQ is equal to 1, then the industry has the same share of its area employment as it does in the nation. An LQ greater than 1 indicates an industry with a greater share of the local area employment than is the case nationwide. For example, Las Vegas will have an LQ greater than 1 in the Leisure and Hospitality industry because this industry makes up a larger share of the Las Vegas employment total than it does for the nation as a whole.

LQs are calculated by first, dividing local industry employment by the all-industry, all-ownerships total of local employment. Second, national industry employment is divided by the all industry, all ownerships total for the nation. Finally, the local ratio is divided by the national ratio.
