School District Demographics Online Reference

The Web-based SDD service is being replaced with the Online Data Access (ODA) feature of the Proximity CommunityViewer (CV) software. CV ODA is a client-server application operating on Windows-based computers that enables you to access school district demographics for any school district as well as other types of school district data and wide-ranging demographic-economic data for other types of geography -- all interlaced with the ability to view thematic and orienteering maps. See CV ODA for more information. Register here to use the CommunityViewer software.

Features. The Proximity School District Demographics Online (SDD) enables the user to perform side-by-side comparative analyses of selected school districts using the Census 2000 School District Special Tabulation data. There is no other online resource that enables this type of comparative analysis with this level of detail. Select from several hundred tables of data items tabulated for several types of tabulation universes (see below). This combination of tabulations provides access to several thousand demographic attributes for each school district in the U.S. (having 50 or more unweighted Census respondents).

Default Settings. The default settings are structured so that data from Table P6 from the "Children's Own" tabulations will be retrieved for Relevant Children Enrolled in Public School for three selected districts. The default districts are Clear Creek ISD, TX, Mesa Unified, AZ, and Denver County 1, CO. Click Submit and the comparative analysis display appears.

Relevant Children Enrolled in Public School is used as the default setting. This category is often of most interest to examine characteristics of the population enrolled in a particular school district. The total population for this universe should be close to the reported enrollment for the 1999-2000 school year by the district.

Data for each district are shown as columns in the resulting display. This version displays the state and Federal school district code at the top of each district/column. Subsequent versions will features names, percentages, and have other computational/display features.

FAQs

  1. How does this data resource relate to others?

There are several Proximity school/school district information resources that are interrelated:

      • Main School District Information Resources Web Page
      • School District Information System (fee based)
      • Children's Demographics Query (no fee)
      • School District Map Files (no fee)

See the Web presentation for Clear Creek ISD, TX to view a summary and example of how these resources can be blended/integrated for school system planning and analysis.

  2. How do I select a different school district?

Click on the school district selection box to be changed. A lengthy list of districts will display -- this is a list of all school districts in the U.S. You are initially positioned on the district to be replaced. Districts are organized in a state by state manner. If you want a district in another state, use the scroll bar for rapid scrolling access. Once you have reached the vicinity listing of interest use the arrow in the scroll bar to move at a slower pace. When you see the district of interest, double click the name.

Districts are in sort order, first by state postal abbreviation and then district name.

  3. Why would I use the P (Population) tables in the HC tableset as opposed to the P tables in the CO tableset?

First, the universe of tabulation is different "households with children" as opposed to "children's own characteristics." Second, some subject matter items that are of interest to you might only be in the HC tables even though you would like to have the date from the CO tables. For example, the table P64 (Public Assistance Income) is not available in the CO tableset but is available in the HC tableset.

Why is this? Not all SF3 tables are included in every tabulation universe. This is a requirement imposed to maintain confidentiality of respondents.

  4. I see that population items are available. How do I access housing items?

This version includes housing items for the "Households with Children" tables.

  5. How do I determine what is included in tables? Only a table number is provided.

You must use the two links provided to the left of "1 ... Select Table". The "tables cross-reference" lists which table numbers are available by type of tabulation universe. The "list of table names" provides a list of the table title and supplemental information about specific table contents.

  6. How are race and ethnicity data presented?

All "Race Alone" tables (i.e. White Alone, Black or African American Alone, American Indian and Alaska Native Alone, Asian Alone, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander Alone or Some Other Race Alone) include Hispanic and non-Hispanic origins.

  7. How accurate are the data?

These data are estimates of population and housing characteristics and are subject to errors of estimation and measurement. The smaller the population of an area, the relatively less reliable the estimate. Our experience in examining thousands of these data values is that they are quite accurate and superior to any other source of data,

Independent cell rounding has been applied to help maintain confidentiality. Each cell in the Census 2000 special tabulation matrix have been independently rounded. As a result of the cell rounding process:
      • 0 remains 0
      • 1-7 rounds to 4
      • 8 or greater rounds to the nearest multiple of 5

All totals, subtotals, and derived measures were computed prior to rounding and the independent cell rounding process disrupts table additivity.
