Create thematic maps, such as the one shown at right, for the U.S. or any state using the Proximity national scope or state by census tract shapefiles with integrated demographics.  This map shows the pattern of median household income by census tract for Texas.  The map was developed using the CommunityViewer (CV -- http://proximityone.com/cv.htm) GIS software. Examine wide-ranging demographic subject matter; choose from hundreds of ready-to-use demographic subject matter items (see list) to meet your needs. This section reviews how you can acquire and use these resources and covers these topics:

 

 

If you are already a CommunityViewer user, or you want to just examine the state by census tract data/shapefiles, skip section 1 and instead expand the Texas census tracts project fileset (29 MB) to the folder c:\cv\tracts. Sections 2 and 3 apply to all users.

 

1 - Installing CV GIS and Texas tract geodemographic files on your computer

 

Click Install CommunityViewer (CV -- http://proximityone.com/cv.htm) to install the CV software on your Win32 computer.

 
The installer (21 MB) installs the CV software and the Texas census tracts project fileset.  When prompted, choose either Run or Save the cvinstaller program (if you save it, you will need to run the installer from the saved location).  The CV software is installed in the folder c:\cv.  The Texas census tract files are installed in the folder c:\cv\tracts.  The software and data may be removed by using the uninstaller or by deleting the folder c:\cv.

 

The Texas census tracts shapefile included in the project fileset contains only the geocodes, geography attributes and subject matter fields DP1001, DP1023 and DP3058.  See full list of subject matter items.

 

Many CV features are not enabled in this no fee version.  A project cannot be saved using the no fee version.  Upgrade this version of CV to meet your application needs. Ordering information.

 

 

2 - Installing [any state] tract geodemographic shapefiles on your computer

 

Individual state or the U.S. by census tract shapefiles with integrated demographics may be installed and used with the CV GIS.  Order shapefiles using secure charge links provided below. Please also complete the tracts order form and (indicate state in text section when ordering a single state).

About the shapefiles.  Both the census tract boundaries and demographics are Census 2000 vintage.  The boundary files updates reflect more detailed and precise boundaries than earlier smoothed versions.  Boundaries exactly match all geographies updated in the Census Bureau MAF/TIGER Accuracy Improvement Project (counties, census blocks, places, roads, water features, etc.) .  For coastal states, tract boundaries extending to 3-mile limit have been clipped to the state smoothed water edge boundary.

 

Integrated demographics.  Using the CV dBMerge feature we have integrated approximately 250 demographic subject matter items into the shapefile. Derived from the Proximity Demographic Profile datasets (DP1 ... DP2 ... DP3 ... DP4), the items/fields are listed below.
