  -- Feature Class Codes

The TIGER Feature Class Codes (MTFCC) provide categories to classify TIGER records by type. Some TIGER/Line data layers include multiple MTFCC types, e.g., EDGES (All Lines), POINTLM (Point Landmarks), and AREALM (Area Landmarks), while others include a single MTFCC type, e.g., ADDR (Address Ranges), TABBLOCK (Blocks), and County Subdivisions (COUSUB). In addition, individual linear features in the EDGES layer can have multiple types, to represent cases where street centerlines, hydrographic, and rail features are spatially coincident, or to further specify characteristics of some feature types, e.g., bridges, tunnels, divided roads, etc. For edges that represent roads in combination with other features, the MTFCC in the All Lines Shapefile will reflect the road feature. The MTFCC type system also implies a hierarchical taxonomy with single letter top-level groups, e.g., S=Road/Path Features, H=Hydrographic Features, R=Rail Features, etc., sub-groups, e.g., K2=Workplaces, K12=Potential Living Quarters, and in some cases, further sub-group divisions, e.g., K21=Governmental, K23=Commercial Workplace, etc.

The DMD Feature Class Code is shown in the second column of the table. The DMD FCC uses a 5-character variation of the MTFCC 4-character code.
