Based on 2009-10 school year, the three states with the largest number of school districts are Texas, California and Illinois. Dbl-click the "Districts" column in the ranking table presented below to view states by number of districts in descending order. The three states with the largest 2009 school age (5-17 years) population are California, Texas and New York. Use the ranking table to examine how school districts are distributed with regard to percent of districts by median poverty (rightmost three columns). Nine states have more than fifty percent of the state's districts with poverty level of 20% or more.

Data in the table show the count of 2009-10 school districts by state, 2009 estimate of school-age population and poverty incidence. These estimates are developed by the Census Bureau under sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Education. The estimates are used in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act funding formulas to determine state and school district allocations.

These are first national scope demographic data making use of the 2009-10 school district boundaries. There will be no data from Census 2010 for these subject matter categories (no long form questionnaire). New 2009 American Community Survey estimates available in December 2010, provide "richer demographics" that are centric to mid-2007.
