Housing Units. During the period 2010 to 2020, the number of housing units changed from 30,726 (2010) to 31,958 (2020), a change of 1,232 (4.0%). See details on occupied/vacant units, tenure, value, rent and related in Section 2.4.2. below.

Population & Components of Change. During the period 2010 to 2020, the population of Laurens County, SC changed from 66,519 (2010) to 67,883 (2020), a change of 1,364 (2.1%).

Components of population change during the 2010-2020 period were births 7,723, deaths 8,463, and net migration 2,142. The population natural increase, births less deaths, was -740.

The 7/1/20 model-based population estimate was 67,551 compared to the 7/1/21 model-based population estimate of 67,803. Components of change over the year were births 716, deaths 1,029, international migration 42, domestic migration 518. The net migration was 560. The natural increase was -313.

Income. The median household income changed from $36,345 in 2010 to $43,766, a change of $7,421 ( 20.4%).

Poverty. The number of people in poverty (all ages) changed from 12,520 in 2010 to 12,132, a change of -388 ( -3.1%). The poverty rate (all ages) changed from 19.5 in 2010 to 18.4, a change of -1.1 ( -5.6%).

For most counties, median household income (MHI) has increased between 2010 and 2020, while the poverty rate has decreased.
This is due in part to Federal stimulus funds transfer payments in 2020. This section presents income and poverty data for each year 2010-2020 for this county, corresponding state and the U.S. This is the only Federal source of current estimate of MHI and poverty for all counties.
