Housing Units by County -- Patterns & Trends
  -- U.S. national scope counties; 2020-2023
-- tools and data to examine patterns and trends.

October 2024. From 2020 to 2023, among larger counties, the number of housing units grew fastest in St. Johns County, FL (17.6%) and Montgomery County, TX (16.6%). To examine issues such as affordable housing, or the housing market more in general, requires data on the number of housing units.

This section provides access to tools and data to examine those patterns and trends for counties, metros, states and the U.S. The county and state housing unit data included in this section are annually updated model-based estimates developed by the Census Bureau. Use the interactive table below to view, rank, and query housing unit patterns and change by county. These data are used to develop estimates and projections to 2060 among others.

The U.S. housing stock grew by more than 4.9 million units from Census 2020 through 2023, reaching over 140.5 million units (3.4%). The number of units increased from 140,498,736 units (4/1/2020) to 145,344,636 units (7/1/2023).
