This section illustrates the use of Google Maps API to show an integrated view of the Horseheads CSD, NY school district (red boundary); Horseheads schools (red markers), and Census 2010 census tracts for Chemung County, NY (blue boundaries, blue markers). These geographies/demographics are shown/accessed in context of interactive mapping with Google-sourced roads and landmarks with optional satellite view. Use Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and other browsers. The blue census tract boundaries shown in the map exhaust the area of Chemung County, NY. Use the zoom tool to zoom out and view the area relative to the state or zoom in to view a school in context of neighborhood. Clicking a blue census tract marker shows an illustrative mini-html page. Click on the link in that html to view a Census 2010 demographic profile for that census tract. Other links could be added. Or, click a census tract link in the table below the map to view the demographic profile for that tract. The Census 2010 demographic profile was developed using the Demographic Data Analyst (DDA) to process the Census 2010 Summary File 1 (SF1). A DDA feature was used to generate the demographic profile in html format. Clicking a red school marker shows an illustrative mini-html page. Click on the link in that html to view either the Department of Education school profile or the school home page. Other links could be added. Under the Hood. The DDA software was used to extract data from Census 2010 SF1 and create the tract-by-tract html files. Shapefiles for census tracts, the school district and schools were converted to XML structure using the CommunityViewer GIS Shp2Xml tool. The XML files were merged into one file and augmented with additional attributes. Using Javascript, the XML file was then connected to the Google Maps API for the dynamic map rendering and data access. Census tract boundaries make use of smoothed boundaries and may not exactly match the actual boundary that shows more vertices. Smoothed boundaries permit the map view to refresh more quickly.
